Restraint Malfunction is a harsh noise and experimental project based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, created by solo artist Michael Jurek. Emerging in late 2021, the project was established as a cathartic sonic outlet for Jurek to navigate personal mental obstacles through sound. The music is characterized by its abrasive and textural depth, utilizing power electronics, modular synthesis, and industrial clangor to construct dense, "fiery" soundscapes that challenge the listener's sensory perceptions. Since the release of the debut album Restraint Malfunction -I- in August 2021, the project has maintained a prolific output, with numerous subsequent releases including Harsh Noise Synthesis, Torrential Assault, and Heat Magnet. A staple of the Milwaukee underground experimental scene, Restraint Malfunction frequently performs at local venues such as MKE Ultra and Quarters Rock 'n Roll Palace. The project’s work has also been featured on compilations for labels like FTAM, solidifying its place within the region's noise community.
